Research Librarian

The Research Librarian supervises day-to-day operations of office library location and performs skilled and sophisticated legal research for lawyers and clients using a variety of electronic and print resources. Projects may include obtaining legal, business and medical/scientific literature; authenticating cited sources; finding biographical details on judges and counsel; and tracking litigation.

This position can reside in our Austin, Dallas, Houston or San Antonio office.  This position reports to the US Director, Knowledge Services in Houston, Texas.

Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct research in a wide range of areas of law: business intelligence, public records, state/federal legislative history and news media
  • Create current awareness alerts for news, court dockets, and state/federal legislation and regulations
  • Deliver library instruction to new lawyers and staff; provide library orientation to summer associates
  • Provide needs-based and planned training to lawyers and team members and arrange vendor training as needed
  • Keep abreast of new features and technologies as these changes affect legal research
  • Assist with collection improvement by evaluating information needs, research requests, available resources and usage patterns; provide input on addition of new resources and removal of resources no longer needed
  • Assist with collection maintenance duties including the assessment of suitable online in lieu of print resources
  • Assist with financial management of the library by reviewing and confirming invoices and allocating expenses to the appropriate accounts
  • High level of contact with lawyers, paralegals, legal secretaries and other firm Librarians; moderate level of contact with members of the firm’s Marketing department, vendors, lending libraries; and occasional level of contact with firm clients

Qualifications and Experience

  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written
  • Strong work ethic and ability to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, problem solving skills and attention to detail
  • Master of Science in Library and Information Science
  • Minimum 5 years of law or special library experience
  • Experience using major legal and business databases/research platforms, including Westlaw Edge, Lexis Advance, WK Cheetah, Bloomberg Law
  • Experience using automated library systems
  • Ability to learn new applications and research tools quickly
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments simultaneously, perform under tight time deadlines and flexibly adjust to changing priorities
  • Ability to self-manage
  • Light to moderate physical effort, including climbing step stools, pushing loaded book carts, lifting books (weighing up to 30 pounds) and carrying various other materials (weighing up to 15 pounds)
