US Director, Human Resources

The US Director, Human Resources will act as a strategic business partner and formulate partnerships across the firm to deliver value added services to management and employees that reflect the core business principles of the firm while maintaining the business objectives. This individual will develop and execute strategies to modernize and position the HR function to support the law firm of the future. The director oversees all aspects of the human resources function including business services recruiting, development, retention, promotion and engagement efforts, as well as operational functions such as benefits, payroll and HR systems.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Oversee the administration of human resource programs including, but not limited to, compensation, payroll, benefits, LOAs, disciplinary matters, disputes and investigations, performance, productivity, recognition, business services recruiting, retention and engagement
  • Provide guidance and direction to managers for all human resource processes including employee relations, performance management, training and development, talent assessment, succession plans, mentoring and diversity
  • Provide leadership and overall development of HR team and direct reports
  • Develop and implement short-term and long-term HR strategies and initiatives aligned with the overall business strategy with a focus on continued improvement
  • Develop and administer programs, policies, procedures and guidelines to help align the workforce with the strategic goals of the firm
  • Develop and implements department budget
  • Advise on complex employee relations issues; ensuring thorough and objective investigations, involvement of legal counsel and recommendation of disciplinary action, performance improvement plans, and terminations
  • Continually assess the competitiveness of all compensation and benefit programs to provide motivation, incentives and rewards for effective performance and to provide programs that enhance the short and long-range health and welfare of all employees
  • Direct organizational planning that evaluates Firm structure, job design and personnel forecasting
  • Deliver innovative solutions to meet firm needs; lead the development and implementation of a variety of human resources projects of broad scope
  • Maintain knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, legal industry, and employment law; applies this knowledge to communicate changes in policy, practice, and resources to upper management

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; degree in Human Resource Management preferred
  • Minimum of 15 years of related and progressively more responsible and broad-based Human Resources experience with a minimum of five years of leadership and management experience in a large, complex organization
  • Experience with health benefits, retirement benefits and total rewards programs
  • Knowledge of Defined Benefit and Defined Contribution Plans
  • Strong business acumen, superior problem-solving and relationship building skills
  • Adaptable and flexible leadership style
  • Comprehensive knowledge of principles & practices of HR, including technology applications, HR regulations & compliance
  • Demonstrated skills in employee relations with strong analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to work independently and use sound judgment in decision making; demonstrated ability to partner and influence at all levels in the business and to be viewed as a credible, valuable source of information and integral part of management team
  • Excellent communication abilities, both written and oral
  • Strong organization and time management/project management skills necessary to prioritize multiple assignments and to meet set deadlines; ability to react quickly in a fast-paced, changing environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to work autonomously as well as collaboratively with all levels of management, lawyers and employees
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office  
  • Experience with Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS)
  • Integrity and good judgment when handling confidential information
