Rudy Perrino, a litigator with substantial experience handling bet-the-company cases, especially those involving cross-border and international mass tort claims, has joined Fulbright as a partner.
Perrino joins Fulbright’s Los Angeles office from Dole Food Company, Inc., where he previously served as the company’s director of litigation. He joined Dole in 2004 after seven years in private practice handling toxic tort, environmental and commercial litigation.
“Rudy brings experience developing, managing and successfully executing high-exposure global litigation strategies for a Fortune 500 company, making him an ideal fit within our team of litigators,” said Steven B. Pfeiffer, the Chair of Fulbright’s Executive Committee. “Our lawyers are known for their ability to handle the complex legal, factual and cultural challenges that international disputes present.”
Fulbright lawyers have defended many high-profile and high-exposure mass tort and catastrophic cases amid ongoing changes in plaintiffs’ strategies, discovery technologies and the evolving statutory and regulatory environment.
“Like others already on our team, Rudy has been at the leading-edge of mass tort litigation pending in the United States and abroad,” said Stephen C. Dillard, the head of Fulbright’s global litigation and disputes practice. “He adds a unique perspective that complements our existing team in assisting clients with long-term, innovative legal strategies.”
While at Dole, Perrino managed litigation around the world, including a number of prominent cases, filed in the U.S. and abroad, involving claims brought by thousands of workers from Central and South America, the Caribbean, the Philippines and Africa. The workers claimed to have been injured by the pesticide DBCP used in the 1970s. Perrino’s active, hands-on management of the litigation was critical to Dole’s numerous successes in these lawsuits.
“These cases are part of an increasing trend by the plaintiffs’ bar to bring cases on behalf of foreign plaintiffs, not just in the U.S., but in the foreign jurisdictions where the plaintiffs reside,” Perrino said. He spent more than five years managing these types of worldwide claims and successfully defeated them at all stages of litigation.
“Given Fulbright’s international platform and strong mass tort and products liability practice, joining this impressive team allows me to help other businesses with these rapidly growing types of international and cross-border claims,” he said. “It is an honor to become part of such a talented team.”
Before joining Dole, Perrino was in private practice, where he successfully defended numerous cases involving claims of toxic exposure and environmental contamination. He represented a number of business interests, including chemical, petroleum and product manufacturers, distributors, commercial lending institutions and public entities, both at the regulatory level and in litigation. Perrino received his law degree from the University of San Diego School of Law and his undergraduate degree from the University of California, Riverside. He is licensed to practice law in California and currently serves as co-chair of the Mass Tort Committee of the ABA Section of Litigation.
“Rudy is a skilled, strategic and hard-working litigator, who understands from first-hand experience the necessity to develop and implement a comprehensive game plan to protect a company’s interests in high stakes litigation,” said Peter Mason, the head of Fulbright’s Los Angeles office. “He fits in perfectly with our regional, national and international litigation practice. We are extremely pleased he is part of our team.”
