Business Development Manager, Litigation

The Role

Dispute Resolution and Litigation (‘Disputes’) is a key service area for Norton Rose Fulbright, advising many of the world’s largest corporations and financial institutions on complex, high-value and sensitive multi-jurisdictional disputes.

The successful candidate will work with our US Head of Dispute Resolution and Litigation to support the achievement of the business growth targets of the US team.  You will generate, advise on and drive forward development of key strategic business development initiatives and campaigns, with particular focus on raising the external profile of the Disputes team; and on identifying opportunities to leverage the significant growth of this service area – in particular, with Canada, Latin America, EMEA, South Africa and Australia.

We are looking for a candidate who is an established Marketing/Business Development (‘BD’) Manager; who has a strong understanding of professional services; someone who can quickly build rapport with key stakeholders; can work independently; has experience of managing direct reports; and has the confidence and insight to take a view of direction on behalf of stakeholders.

This position reports into the Director of Business Development for our practice teams.  This position is ideally based in our Dallas, Houston, or New York office.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Devise and deliver a practical BD strategy and marketing plan for growing and developing this key strand of our business, focused on the business priorities of revenue generation, profile development and opportunity realization
  • Ensure that the objectives and activities of the US practice are aligned with those of the wider global group, with an integrated approach taken to identifying and developing common opportunities and clients
  • Manage the budget process in terms of tracking spend against budget allocation, measuring and reporting on return on investment and evaluating efficiencies
  • Maintain and, where required, develop marketing and BD processes and infrastructure for the group to go to market efficiently and consistently. Consistent presentation of our US capabilities and open access to this information are key
  • From marketing campaigns and thought leadership, support product and tool development for client dialogue and targeting purposes
  • Design and deliver marketing communications campaigns and thought leadership tactics to  drive brand recognition and growth
  • Work with the communications teams to develop our reputation for Disputes work through collateral and press; events; bring innovation to our communications style and channel use
  • Manage submissions to and performance in directories; agree target rankings with Head of Dispute Resolution and Litigation, US; facilitate contribution to directories using consistent positioning messages; report on change in rankings and against targets set; refine approach as needed
  • Ensure the Disputes practice is brand compliant and adopts our Visual Identity
  • Ensure all communications channels convey fresh, consistent messaging and capability presentation (including but not limited to web, collateral, bids, experience statements, directories, CVs)
  • Project manage relevant practice bids; provide input on approach, team formations; draft, create, review and edit content; manage document development where necessary; ensure adherence to branding requirements; ensure adherence to pricing procedures
  • Develop high quality content for use in bids as boiler plate text to convey positioning, experience and sales messages and ensure, for consistent messaging and capability presentation, that the content is replicated in appropriate systems and all communications channels
  • Track and facilitate panel opportunities
  • Encourage practice adherence to procedures and best practice with Norton Rose Fulbright systems including Bid Support, and recording deals and contacts in InterAction.
  • Day-to-day management of assigned team members

Skills and Experience Required

  • Minimum 6 years relevant experience in a professional services or business sector environment; ideally with some understanding of law firms
  • Demonstrable experience in managing and writing bids
  • Experience managing direct reports
  • Understands when to act and when to ask
  • Understands the need and has the ability to manage expectations
  • Good attention to detail
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Confident, persuasive and assertive; capable of building trust amongst the partnership and wider stakeholder community
  • Experience of working in a legal and/or professional services environment
  • Proficiency with Word, PowerPoint and Excel
  • Ability to work outside of regular business hours and travel
