The Team

This is a high profile team with responsibility to manage proposals through the full proposal lifecycle, ensuring that proposals are completed in an efficient, consistent and professional manner.  The Senior Strategic Bids Manager reports to the Chief Marketing & Business Development Officer and works closely with our partners and other BD professionals across the US and around the globe to lead and manage proposals through to completion, ensuring that proposals are executed in an efficient, consistent and professional manner.

The Role

This role will act as an advocate of best practices and a specialist information resource, and will work with the broader BD team to drive and embed efficiencies in the way we manage the proposal process across practice areas and industries, ensuring we leverage our experience and capabilities and responding to clients in a consistent manner. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Create an appropriately sized strategic bids team that supports the volume, needs and strategy of the US partnership
  • Develop strategy around expanding best practices in bid preparation across the firm and monitor performance against plan throughout the course of the year
  • Obtain scope of proposal from lawyers; draft, edit and proof, including qualifying and obtaining sign off for submission in accordance with protocols, corporate standards and best practices
  • Provide project management support and information resources in order that strategic and panel bids are completed in an efficient, consistent and professional manner
  • Develop and manage relationships and work collaboratively with practice areas, industries, and business development teams
  • Advise and review proposals prepared by other members of the team on appropriate structure and presentation to ensure consistent response to clients
  • Source and develop high-quality materials for use in proposals as standard text
  • Review on an ongoing basic proposal templates and content to ensure best practices are benchmarked against competitor activity and proposal feedback
  • Write, edit, and manage up-to-date practice and experience descriptions and copy as needed
  • Audit existing materials to evaluate strategy and create new copy and approaches as appropriate
  • Provide bid and presentation support for strategic bids to partners and bid teams
  • Conduct debriefs and analyses of feedback on our performance on proposals, whether won or lost, and use this intelligence to improve the quality of future proposals

Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required,  advanced degree or JD a plus
  • Experience working in the proposals function, preferably in a legal services firm
  • Substantial expertise in using both legal and business resources, such as Lexis/Nexis, Pacer, Westlaw and other informational databases
  • Excellent writing, communication, interpersonal, organizational, research and presentation skills
  • A self-starter who can work on own initiative and is proactive in developing ideas and solutions
  • Well-developed persuading and influencing skills
  • Confident, assertive and resilient
  • Attention to detail and accurate typing and writing skills
  • Ability to liaise confidently and build relationships with people at all levels
  • Ability to work under pressure and within tight deadlines
  • Advanced IT skills including advanced Word and Microsoft Office packages
  • Excellent project management skills and the ability to manage workloads
  • Ability to work both autonomously and as part of a team
  • Strong organizational skills and a flexible approach
