Learning & Development Manager

This position is responsible for managing the firm’s learning and development initiatives and programs for the US, for lawyers and Business Services with particular focus on planning, tailoring and delivering both legal and business services training programs for all US offices.

This position reports to the National Directors of Talent Management & Development in Houston and New York.  This position supervises a Learning & Development Coordinator, Learning & Development Assistant, and a CLE Specialist.  Overtime and travel will be required to facilitate training and attend events.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Develop and implement approaches to enhance the skills of our people across the full spectrum of partners, lawyers, business services and legal support services personnel
  • Design and deliver performance development and business skills learning and development programs and revise our existing portfolio as appropriate
  • Develop and administer US-led and Global training programs, live and virtual, that meet professional development goals
  • Collaborate and consult with SMEs regarding the design and maintenance of program content
  • Work with National Directors, C-level firm leaders, Practice Group Heads, and Team Leaders to monitor lawyer and business services  group progress in meeting competencies and identifying developmental needs
  • Manage the firm’s learning & development internal branding function. Daily oversight of CLE Specialist and the firm wide CLE function including accreditation and compliance
  • Identify additional opportunities for growth and development of firm lawyers and business services employees
  • Participate fully in the activities of the Learning & Development team and the wider People & Development team and work closely with other business services teams (across all regions)
  • Maintain own knowledge in the field of learning and development
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties as requested

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Four year degree required; advanced degree or JD preferred
  • At least years of management experience; classroom training experience; experience in professional development, training, and/or organizational development in law firm or professional service environment or experience practicing law in a law firm setting
  • Strong interpersonal skills including demonstrated ability to be effective in both a group and one-on-one setting
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong technology skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; LMS experience a plus
  • Sense of pride in work, willingness to take responsibility and committed to working as a member of the team
  • Proven forward-planning skills and the ability to manage and prioritize own workload effectively
  • Demonstrate excellent client service, serving both internal and external clients
  • Ability to exhibit conscientiousness, dedication, self-discipline and a sense of responsibility
  • Proactive, confident, dynamic, creative, tenacious, resilient and flexible
  • Willingness and ability to travel to offices throughout the U.S. and internationally as needed
