Business Development Manager, Disputes

The Regulation, investigation, securities & compliance (RISC); and Arbitration teams are key service areas for Norton Rose Fulbright, advising many of the world’s largest corporations and financial institutions on complex, high-value and sensitive multi-jurisdictional transactions.

The US team have an immediate need for a business development manager in our fast-paced marketing department, directly supporting the RISC and Arbitration teams within the Disputes group.  This position will work with the team leaders, and all partners in these groups, across the United States.  This position will provide support on day-to-day and strategic marketing and business development activity including credentials, pitches, presentations, events, online content and publications, business planning and budgets.

We are looking for a candidate who is an established marketing/business development manager; who has a strong understanding of professional services; someone who can quickly build rapport with key stakeholders; and has the confidence and insight to take a view of direction on behalf of stakeholders

In addition, the highly-motivated individual will support the business development senior manager by providing strategic thinking and tactical support of initiatives.  These initiatives include:

  • enhancing the market position of the firm
  • strengthening relationships with top clients
  • promoting collaboration across the global practice

This position reports into the Senior business development manager for the Disputes group. 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Project management of pitches and bids, including; provide input on approach, team formations; draft, create, review and edit content; manage document development where necessary; ensure adherence to branding requirements; ensure adherence to pricing procedures
  • Ensure follow up is sought from client post pitch; track and act on actions which arise; assess how feedback can be used to drive behavioral change
  • Monitor panel appointments and drive realization of opportunities presented
  • Develop high quality content for use in bids as boiler plate text, to convey positioning, experience and sales messages, and ensure that this content is replicated in appropriate systems and all communications channels
  • Analyze win/lose rates and make recommendations as to how to improve performance
  • Connect the practice groups with the global, regional, sector and domestic key client program and drive realization of opportunities
  • Maintain awareness of relevant global and local marketing products (e.g. from sector or regional programs) which can be used for client development and dialogue
  • Oversee the RISC and Arbitration BD activity to ensure objectives are met; including, but not limited to, client development, profile raising, marketing and communications, pitching and event management
  • Manage the US RISC and Arbitration teams marketing budgets
  • Efficiently and effectively research current and potential clients
  • Ensuring the practice experience content is up-to-date and representative of the firm’s best work
  • Systematically collecting and submitting league table and directory submissions and measuring performance; agree target rankings with team leads for RISC and Arbitration teams; facilitate contribution to league tables and directories using consistent positioning messages; report on change in rankings and against targets set; refine approach as needed
  • Ensure the RISC and Arbitration brands are compliant and adopt the visual identity to deliver consistent materials to market
  • Ensure all communications channels convey consistent messaging and capability presentation (including but not limited to web, collateral, bids, experience statements, directories, league tables, CVs)
  • Coordinate and identify sponsorships, conferences or speaking opportunities that raise the firms overall profile
  • Coordinating contributions and input into business development systems including InterAction (CRM), bids and CV databases for supporting initiatives such as bids, events, client intelligence, experience statement compilation, league table and legal directory submissions
  • Integrating the use of these systems into all activity according to best practice
  • Assisting fee earners and their secretaries with contact management

Skills and experience required:

  • 4-6 years relevant experience in a professional services or business sector environment; ideally with some experience in law firms
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Demonstrable experience in managing and writing bids
  • Understands when to act and when to ask
  • Understands the need and has the ability to manage expectations
  • Good attention to detail
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Self-starter with excellent relationship building and interpersonal skills
  • Proven organizational skills with project management experience and multi-tasking abilities
  • Hands-on experience using all programs under the Microsoft Suite (including direct experience with PowerPoint and advanced functions within Excel)

  • Experience of working in a legal and/or professional services environment
  • Some overtime and travel is required
