Staples, Inc., a Fulbright client, has agreed to sponsor the Teacher of the Month program for the Education Foundation of Harris County. The program supports after school programs for public school students in the Houston Independent School District and the other 25 school districts in Harris County, Texas. It culminates in a Teacher of the Year award.
The process leading to the sponsorship began when the Foundation lost its key sponsor for the award, OfficeMax. Douglas H. Kleiner, President and CEO of the Foundation, called on Fulbright’s Frank Jones for ideas. Jones, who is a member of the Citizens Advisory Board of the Foundation, thought a good replacement for OfficeMax would be Staples, a Fulbright client with a major presence in Houston. Jones contacted Fulbright Los Angeles partner Bob Fischer, who has an established relationship with Staples, and he approached the client with the sponsorship idea.
The award program will be funded by the Staples Foundation for Learning,® which was established in 2002. Since then, it has contributed to hundreds of nonprofits, including local community groups and national organizations, such as The Boys & Girls Club of America, Ashoka, Earth Force, Initiative for a Competitive Inner City and Hispanic Heritage Foundation.
